Hi there! Please come and have a seat, won't you?
So where should I start? Well, my name is Cynthia. I live in Brooklyn with my husband Al and beautiful son Jac. I was born in Michigan and grew up in Texas. And I lived in Spain for two years before ending up in New York City. Just before my son was born I was working in Westchester and Manhattan for a brokerage firm. Now I work from my tiny kitchen. I feel unbelievably lucky to be where I am. And I probably won't be coaxed away from here unless I have my passport in hand.
I received my B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and have taken photography courses at the School of Visual Arts. I also pick up pastry classes here and there as they're offered around the city.
Pure Vivante is where I chronicle my baking and sometimes cooking creations, travels and stories.
When I was 12 years old I chose a vegetarian diet while living in the land o’ BBQ.
More recently, when my son was about 7 months old he was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, fish and shellfish. From that moment on, I avoided all those foods as well.
Why Pure Vivante?
I am an unabashed francophile. Maybe it’s the French heritage from my grandfather whom I did not get to meet. I was 19 years old when I first stepped off the train at the Gare du Nord in Paris. Something about that country’s attention to art, history and obsession with food just speaks to me.
The word pure (in English as in French) means unadulterated; having no inferior substance. I am passionate about food that is sustainable, delicious, and not genetically-modified.
Vivante is the French word for living. I love travel, learning and life. One dictionary definition says a bon vivant is a person having cultivated, refined, and sociable tastes especially with respect to food and drink. I think this is a good term to describe this space, too.
